Behind the Scenes: How I Prep My Studio For A Newborn Session

Running a newborn photography studio means that most of the magic happens before the camera ever clicks.
While parents often arrive and see a warm, serene space ready for their baby, there’s a thoughtful process behind every setup. One of my favorite parts of that process? Prepping the posing bed. It’s where your baby’s story begins layered in soft textures, gentle tones, and careful intention.
The posing bed is where I build the foundation for each session. It may look like a simple beanbag setup to some, but every layer I place has a purpose, from supporting baby safely to creating a soft, flattering background that photographs beautifully.
I begin with a base layer, then add additional textures, wraps, and accent details to match your style and preferences. Whether it’s cozy creams, earthy neutrals, or a soft pop of color, these small choices create a big visual impact.
For my clients, this step is one you may not think about, but it’s a vital part of ensuring your baby’s comfort and safety during the session. I only use materials that are soft, clean, and designed for newborn skin. I also set the studio temperature, prep the noise machine, and organize my workflow to make everything as seamless and calm as possible for both baby and parents.
Every session is a little different because every baby is different. That’s why I build flexibility into my prep. I’ll often create two to three posing setups ahead of time, allowing for easy transitions if your baby prefers to be swaddled or needs extra soothing.
My goal is always the same: to keep your baby comfortable, safe, and beautifully photographed in a way that feels natural and timeless.

For fellow photographers reading this, you know this prep phase can feel overwhelming when you’re just getting started, or even when you’re a few years in. I remember the trial and error of figuring out what materials worked best, how to save time between transitions, and what props actually held up over time. That’s one reason I started sharing my knowledge on my Patreon page.
Inside my Patreon, I offer real-world advice for photographers looking to elevate their newborn workflow. I walk through how I prep each session, show how I organize and store props, and offer templates and checklists I’ve refined over the years. It’s not just about pretty pictures it’s about building a system that works and makes your life easier while keeping baby safety top priority.
Whether you’re a new photographer wondering what to invest in first, or someone more seasoned looking to streamline your sessions, I’ve created content that’s approachable and actionable. I believe in teaching the why behind each step, not just the how. The more confident you are in your prep, the more smoothly your sessions will go, and the more your clients will trust you.
And for my amazing clients who are expecting know that everything I do before your session is done with care, love, and a lot of experience. You may not see the fluffing, folding, and layering that happens before you arrive, but you’ll feel the difference it makes during your time in the studio. It’s all designed to create a calm, beautiful experience for your baby’s first portraits.
So whether you’re a parent getting ready for your session, or a photographer working to grow your business, I hope this behind-the-scenes glimpse gives you insight into how much thought and heart goes into each and every shoot.
